Ergonomics in an easy way. In this video series I'll go through what it is in depth, what the benefits are, and what the purpose of an ergonomic point of view is.
Ergonomics is the study of employees and work interactions to improve employee well-being and increase effective results. With good ergonomics, the purpose is to increase safety, promote employee health, promote well-being at work, and make work error-free. If using some product or task at work is causing issues, then the product or work task has flaws in its design.
If we want to break down the word "ergonomics" into smaller pieces, then we need to travel to ancient Greece - the word is made up from "ergon", meaning work, and "nomos", meaning natural law.
Have you ever stepped into a room and reached for the light switch, only to light up the wrong lamp? You fumble with every button and try to figure out which switch you need to turn off to get the desired result - when you see a panel like this, it's quite hard to figure out which switch controls what. A simple example from everyday activities: a door - when you get in front of it, you check whether you need to pull, push, or twist a knob, and think about the knob's height relative to you or a person with a disability. A good design should cause no issues to anyone using that door or tool.
What kind of subcategories are there in ergonomics? Physical: the work environment, work station, work equipment and work methods, and how the procedure is planned. Cognitive: operating systems, user interfaces, and how information is presented to the user. Organizational: employee work processes, work times and process quality, collaboration in the whole process.
